The project analyzes the Pacific as a space of knowledge transfer and interaction, which shape state and non-state actors through contacts, reciprocal influences and conflicts. It is divided in two focus areas: "Migration and Mobility" and "Environment, Climate, Energy", two topical fields of research defined by cross-border characteristics. In this, the project responds to two current observations that are of particular relevance to the Pacific region from a geopolitical perspective: the discursive self-isolation of political entities on the one hand and the confrontation with global and transnational challenges (environment, climate, migration, mobility) and consequential changes and adaptations of societies on the other. The project team consists of 12 postdoctoral researchers based at the German Historical Institute Moscow, the German Institute for Japanese Studies Tokyo with its research group at the National University of Singapore, the German Historical Institute in Washington and it’s Pacific Office at UC Berkeley and the Max Weber Foundation Office in Beijing. Each of the participating researchers contributes to the overall project with their individual research. In addition, academic conferences and workshops with external partners are organized throughout the region.
