Applications are now open for the CMO Summer Academy 2026.
About the Summer Academy
The CMO Summer Academy 2026 brings together young researchers, musicians, and advanced students working in musicology, Ottoman studies, manuscript studies, digital humanities, historical performance practice, and related fields for an intensive week of collaborative workshops and interdisciplinary exchange.
Organized within the framework of the Corpus Musicae Ottomanicae (CMO) project and hosted by the Orient-Institut Istanbul, the Academy focuses on the diverse historical traditions of music and text transmission in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Ottoman world. Through hands-on workshops led by international specialists, participants will engage directly with historical sources, editorial practices, cataloging methodologies, digital scholarly editions, and historically informed performance approaches.
The Academy approaches musical manuscripts not merely as static archival objects, but as dynamic witnesses to interconnected literary, musical, performative, and intellectual traditions.
The Summer Academy is free of charge, and funding for travel and accommodation is available for a limited number of applicants.
Special attention will be given to:
• Eastern Mediterranean and Ottoman manuscript traditions
• Manuscript cultures in a variety of scripts and notations
• Critical music & text editions
• Historical performance practices
• Music cataloging, metadata creation, and research data management
• Digital scholarly editions and XML-based infrastructures
• Oral and written transmission processes
• Interdisciplinary and comparative research methodologies
Why join this Academy?
Ottoman music sources are not only repositories of musical repertoires, but also dynamic sites of transmission, textual production, literary traditions, editorial practice, performance, and cultural exchange. Bringing together manuscript studies, critical editions, cataloging, research data management, digital humanities, and performance, the CMO Summer Academy aims to create a shared environment in which different approaches can inform and enrich one another.
Structure of the Academy
The Summer Academy combines lectures and discussions with parallel workshop modules, hands-on sessions, collaborative learning environments, and informal participant exchange. Participants apply for one primary workshop module and may indicate additional module interests depending on capacity and scheduling.
