Edited volume to the entangled trajectories of (anti-)gender politics, religious agency, and radical societal transformations during the late socialist and early post-socialist period across Eastern and South-Eastern Europe, with particular attention to the transformations associated with perestroika and the dissolution of the Soviet Union
Titles and abstracts submission deadline: July 31, 2026
Dr. Nadezhda Beliakova (University Bielefeld) and Dr. Anna Sidorevich (Sciences Po – Paris Institute of Political Studies) invite you to contribute to an edited volume as part of the CA23149 initiative “Democratization at Stake? Comparing Anti-Gender Politics in CEE and NME Countries” (Antigender-Politics) (approx. 9,000 words including notes and references).
The volume seeks to historicize the relationship between religion and gender politics beyond the image of religious revival as a linear turn towards post-socialist retraditionalization. Instead, it approaches this relationship through processes of mutual constitution, paying attention to tensions between continuity and rupture, visibility and marginality, as well as local and transnational dynamics. We would like to examine the genealogies of what could be described as “anti-gender” politics, with particular attention to the diverse strategies, means, and vocabularies through which different religious actors contributed to the construction of late- and post-socialist notions of gender roles, sexuality, and reproductive rights as fields of contestation.
Both empirical case studies and comparative or transnational approaches from disciplines such as history, sociology, anthropology, political science, media studies, and religious studies are welcomed. Contributions engaging with concepts such as entanglement, agency, translation, and circulation are especially encouraged.
Publication date: 1st half of 2028
