This lecture explores the teaching and learning of an important and highly popular artistic practice in the city of Istanbul, the musical tradition of ney playing (the reed flute). The ney is a key instrument in both Ottoman and Post-Ottoman art musics. Pedagogues and students alike relate the aesthetic process of ney-training to a variety of ethical endeavors, and explicitly claim that an experience of ethical becoming is facilitated through learning this art in a certain way.
